Securely Delete Recycle Bin on Windows 10

Deleting files from Windows 10 Recycle Bin doesn’t mean they are erased permanently from Recycle Bin. Hence, you need to make use of program like eraser to securely delete data from Recycle Bin. There exists several different free and paid applications to securely delete your data but the advantage of using freeware application is that it can be integrated into Windows Explorer so you can right-click on the Recycle Bin and securely delete trash from the Recycle Bin.

Before making use of eraser, let us know what is eraser and what it does?

Eraser is an easy to use tool which lets you to delete files and folders securely. With eraser you can schedule the files to be deleted at a specific time. Here are the three methods to erase files permanently from the Recycle Bin.  The first method mentioned here is Eraser’s default setting and other two are DoD methods which are most commonly used.

  • Guttmann method 35-pass Method
  • US DoD 5220.22-M standard 3-pass Method
  • US DoD 5220.22-M standard 7-pass Method

So, how to download and install eraser?

Erasers are available in two forms the first one is portable version and other is full version. Portable version is about 3 MB which can be installed on your PC or storage drive. It can be downloaded from Portable Apps, which can then be copied from the executable file to your flash drive and run it to perform the portable install.

The full version of Eraser comes in three main forms which are precursors for beta testing versions and the beta versions for testing. Here we are downloading the latest stable build of Eraser from their official Source Forge page. After downloading the program installation file, run the installer to complete and make sure to read carefully as Source Forge decides to bundle this application in the future. In case of full version, you can add Eraser to the Context menu so that you can erase files securely without sending them to the Recycle Bin.

How to select the Deletion Method?

Double-click on the Eraser desktop icon and click on “Settings.” Change the erasure setting, and then press the “Save Settings” button. The US DoD 5220.22-M standard 3-pass or 7-pass methods are a faster choice than selecting the default Eraser setting as the Guttmann method 35-pass. For faster experience, change the settings of Eraser to use the 3-pass DoD method.

Secure way of deleting files from Explorer or from your Recycle Bin

If you don’t want to schedule eraser but delete the individual files from Explorer, then right-click the context menu, find a file you want to delete and right-click on it. Then, choose the Eraser context menu and select whether you want to erase the file now or on the next computer restart.

Note: Same process can be followed with files in the Recycle Bin

Another way of creating a delete schedule

Once you have installed Eraser, just double-click the desktop icon to run the program. The first screen you see is the Erase schedule. If you click the arrow on the top then you can create new tasks and there you can import or export task lists. This method is useful if you want to schedule deletion of files or folders like your Windows history. Here to explain this, we are selecting the browsing history folder for Google Chrome and scheduling it to be deleted once every week.

For this, create a new task, give it a name and select the schedule command for deletion, and click on “Add Data” to specify folders. Now select a deletion method or use the default method. Next, choose the folder where your chrome browsing history is stored and deselect the “Delete folder if empty” option. Later, press OK to create a schedule by editing the Schedule. By implementing the changes, you will see your task in the schedule which can be carried out every week. In case, if you want to remove the task, go to the Erase Schedule and right-click on the task and select the “Delete Task” option.

Using the Portable App

The scheduler on the portable app works in the same manner, but here you need to have your flash drive plugged in at the time while tasks are being carried out. As mentioned earlier, in the portable version of Eraser there is no right-click context menu entry, which makes it a bit harder to erase files in Explorer. Here, you need to run the app by double-clicking the “EraserPortable.exe” from the folder where it is installed.

After opening the app, find the files you want to securely delete using Windows Explorer and drag them into the Eraser window. As they show up on the list, click the green play button to delete the files securely. Now you know how to securely delete your files. But, what if you have deleted important files from Recycle Bin? Do you think the files are erased completely from it? No, not at all! With Recycle Bin Recovery software it is possible to restore files erased permanently from Recycle Bin.

As the files are erased from the drive only the pointers to the files will be removed and but the space occupied by the files will be ready to be overwritten by new files. Hence, as soon as files get deleted stop using and saving new files on the computer to avoid the overwriting and choose this recovery software. With this tool, you can recover large deleted files that are too big to save in the Recycle Bin or deleted using Shift+ delete keys. Also, there is round the clock technical assistance to provide assistance in case if you have any queries while using this product.

Learn Is It Safe to Use an Old Version of Microsoft Office

Microsoft has just released Office 2016, but some people are still using versions of the suite that are more than a decade old. What risks are they taking?

All software has a ‘lifecycle’. It gets developed, released, updated and eventually abandoned — usually after a new version or two has been released in the meantime. There’s nothing to stop you using software that’s been dropped by its developer in this way, but with no further updates or bug fixes in prospect, you face an uncertain future if something goes wrong with it.

We’ve written much about the demise of Windows XP over recent months, not least since it was launched 14 years ago and was only finally abandoned by Microsoft in April last year. Microsoft makes more than just operating systems, of course, and it’s other hugely popular application is Office — so what’s happening with its lifecycle?

When is Microsoft Office dropped?

Microsoft Office has been around for decades — the first PC version launched in 1990 and the most recent (Office 2016) was released at the end of September.

Microsoft has obviously long since abandoned older versions of Office and next on the hit list is Office 2010. Released in June 2010, its ‘mainstream’ support comes to an end on October 12th this year — a five-year lifecycle is usual for all Microsoft software. That means unless any outstanding bugs affect its (or Windows’) security, they won’t be fixed after this date.

The clock then starts ticking for ‘extended’ support and, in another five years, that also ends. That means Microsoft then won’t issue updates of any kind for Office 2010 and it then joins Office 2007, Office 2003, Office XP, Office 97 and Office 95 in the halls of obsolete Microsoft Office suites.

Gone, but not forgotten

‘Obsolete’ doesn’t mean ‘useless’, of course, and anecdotal evidence suggests that Office users tend to stick with what they’ve got rather than rush to upgrade to the latest version — unless they’re Office 360 subscribers, that is.

And by ‘anecdotal’ we mean that this piece is being written on Office 2008 for Mac — and we’re sure many of you are still using something older. Office XP (from 2002) still installs and runs perfectly well with Windows 10, for example, but is it really a good idea to keep using Office software that’s so old?

The simple answer, as you might expect, is ‘no’.
